CROWDTHERMAL

CROWDTHERMAL - Empowering citizens and local communities to participate in the development of geothermal projects

CROWDTHERMAL aims at empowering the European public to directly participate in the development of geothermal projects with the help of alternative financing schemes such as crowdfunding. Three case studies in Hungary, Iceland and Spain will validate the findings of the project. One of the major drivers of CROWDTHERMAL is to support the EU’s strategic objective to decrease dependence on fossil fuels, to create a stable energy market, and to reduce the environmental impact of its energy supply. CROWDTHERMAL has initiated a new form of public dialogue to increase interest in geothermal energy. The aim is to take public engagement to a new level, empowering citizens to directly participate in the development of geothermal projects with the help of alternative financing, such as crowdfunding. This will only be possible if public trust can be gained, and the transparency around geothermal projects (and their social and environmental impacts) can be maximised.

The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No 857830
